Gunn Discusses Tarver Rumors
Former IBA Cruiserweight champion and WBO title challenger Bobby Gunn 18-3 {15 KO’s} is excited upon hearing the speculation regarding a fight with former undisputed Light Heavyweight champion Antonio “The Magic Man” Tarver. Two different websites have reported the potential clash. Gunn hopes these rumors can get him a date with a man he calls a great champion.
“I have made calls to Tarver’s promoter and his camp”, said the hard hitting Canadian. “I will fight Tarver anytime, any place, and at any weight. This is not a movie, I am the real life Rocky Balboa and this will be a real fight. I am not obligated or contract to any promoters and I am self managed. I have a great team of attorneys that look out for me so this will not be complicated to get done, if you want an opponent who is colorful and has a world wide fan appeal, you should look no further then me”!

Magic Man Returns to Form; Dawson Stops Ruiz

Antonio Tarver lands a punch on Elvir Muriqi. Photo: Tom Casino/Showtime
HARTFORD, Conn. – The brightest young star and one of the most accomplished veterans of the light heavyweight division won exciting contests Saturday on Showtime at the Connecticut Convention Center. Former two-time world champion Antonio “The Magic Man” Tarver did enough to get past determined Elvir Muriqi to win a controversial close majority decision and the vacant International Boxing Organization (IBO) 175-pound title. And undefeated 24-year old “Bad” Chad Dawson registered a sixth-round TKO over Jesus “Chuy” Ruiz in the first defense of his World Boxing Council (WBC) title.
It took about four rounds for the magic to return for Tarver but when it did he seemingly took control of the bout. Muriqi of Bronx, NY, won more than a few of the early rounds, and a lot of fans with a valiant and exciting effort.
Fighting from the inside, Muriqi seemed to surprise Tarver with some big shots and hard work to the body. But by the sixth, Tarver began landing crisp, punishing combinations in flurries to clearly outscore his opponent.

Tarver-Muriqi Undercard Preview
Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing has stacked the undercard of the June 9th doubleheader on Showtime. Headlined by the come-backing Antonio “Magic Man” Tarver, Saturday’s undercard boasts some of the East Coast’s finest young prospects. This event will take place at the Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford.
This event will also be televised on Showtime Championship Boxing (10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the west coast).
Headlining the undercard is America’s best hope to bring the heavyweight title back to the States—Kevin “Kingpin” Johnson (14-0-1, 6KO’s). In March, the undefeated Johnson offered to step in for an ill Briggs and fight Sultan Ibragimov on short notice—a challenge that the new WBO Heavyweight Champion left unanswered. Johnson went on to fight later that month in South Carolina, and KO’d Curtis Taylor in one round. On June 9th Johnson will be taking on veteran Ron Guerrero (19-13-3, 13KO’s).

Calzaghe Wants Kessler, Taylor, and Hopkins Before Retiring
Joe Calzaghe revealed in a recent interview with Sportinglife that he would like three more fights, possibly against Mikkel Kessler, Jermain Taylor, and Bernard Hopkins, to round out his storied career.
When it comes to Kessler, Calzaghe made it known that he certainly wasn’t his top choice for a future opponent. However Calzaghe didn’t close the door on a possible opportunity of meeting Kessler down the road at some point before he hangs them up:
“Kessler is a good fighter. Frank has been talking to his promoter over the last few days, trying to do something with him.
But I think that fight may be six months or more down the road. Kessler is not a big name in America.
He’s had a couple of good wins but in his last fight he beat Markus Bayer, who was shot. We can go down the Kessler road but Taylor is the one for me.”
So if Kessler isn’t tops then who is? That would be Jermain Taylor as of right now. I say as of right now because we all know how Calzaghe loves to change his mind constantly.
Mega-promoter Frank Warren is desperately trying to get a deal done between Calzaghe and Taylor’s camps for a September bout. Talks have been ongoing for months now but may pick up speed now that both fighters are coming off recent victories and are taking time off.
Calzaghe also expressed interest in Hopkins as always, stating that he would love to take on the winner of the July fight between Hopkins and Winky Wright.
“Hopkins would interest me. Hopkins won his last fight against Antonio Tarver so he’s still a formidable opponent. He looked good against Tarver but he’s 42 and he can’t go on forever. The winner of Winky Wright and Hopkins could be my opponent for January.
They’re fighting in July and I think they’ll put on a good show, but Hopkins will be too big for Winky Wright.”
