Joan Guzman Remains Under Contract

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Contrary to information circulated on the internet, undefeated World Boxing Organization (WBO) Junior Lightweight Champion Joan Guzman (28-0, 17 KOs) remains under contract with his co-promoters, San Diego-based Sycuan Ringside Promotions and Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions through March 1, 2008.

“There have been numerous false reports circulating on the internet that claim Guzman’s contract with Sycuan and Golden Boy has concluded,” said Scott Woodworth, executive vice president of Sycuan Ringside Promotions.  The contract between Sycuan, Golden Boy and Joan Guzman might not necessarily end on March 1, 2008, due to injuries and other specific circumstances.”

De La Hoya-Mayweather Numbers Show Boxing is Back

LOS ANGELES — For a sport that has taken more than its share of slings and arrows over the last few years, boxing has proven to be as resilient as its greatest champions, rising from the canvas in 2007 to again take its place among the most popular and relevant sports in the world.

The latest sign that boxing is back came this week, when HBO revealed that the record-shattering May 5th super fight between Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather did even better than initially thought, with final numbers now clocking in at 2.4 million pay-per-view buys and $134.4 million in domestic revenue.

These numbers have established De La Hoya as the all-time leader in pay-per-view sales with 12.8 million buys.  Not only did his fight with Mayweather shatter existing records for most PPV buys for a non-heavyweight fight, it sailed past the previous leader for overall PPV buys (1.9 million, which was set by the rematch between Evander Holyfield and Mike Tyson in 1997).

“This is amazing news and the strongest possible sign that boxing is not only alive, but that it is thriving,” said De La Hoya, President of Golden Boy Promotions, the promoters of De La Hoya-Mayweather.  “There is no proof like cold, hard facts, and the response of fight fans to these events has given me hope that this sport will soon be back on the front pages of daily newspapers and in the mainstream’s consciousness like it was in its heyday.”

“I’m happy that my fight with Oscar did so well, but I’m not surprised because this is what happens when you give the people what they want,” said Mayweather, who fights Ricky Hatton on December 8.  “I am going to keep bringing that to the people and that’s what they will see when I fight Hatton.  Plus, being a competitive person, I want to go past 2.4 million buys and show the world what boxing is all about.”

What’s even more impressive is that in this record-breaking overall year for the boxing business, there are still two PPV super fights left – the November 10th battle between Sugar Shane Mosley and Miguel Cotto, and the grand pay-per-view finale December 8th between Mayweather and Hatton.

Added Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, “I’ve always said that if you brought great fights and great fighters to the people and promoted it properly that every fight fan would respond, and the success we’ve had this year proves it.  This is the dawning of a new age for boxing, and we are proud to be part of its renaissance.”

Marquez-Juarez Rescheduled for November 3

LOS ANGELES – Boxing fans were left disappointed last week by the announcement that the WBC super featherweight title bout between Juan Manuel Marquez and Rocky Juarez was called off due to a Marquez injury, but thanks to some quick work by Golden Boy Promotions and Showtime, this championship bout has been quickly rescheduled – along with the IBF featherweight title bout between Robert Guerrero and Martin Honorio – for Saturday, Nov. 3.

“Marquez-Juarez is a fight the fans wanted to see, and we pulled out all the stops to make it happen before the end of the year,” said Oscar de la Hoya, president of Golden Boy Promotions.  “But we couldn’t have done this without Ken Hershman and Showtime.  We thank them for helping us put this great fight back on and are excited to be promoting our first Showtime event.”

“Delivering real fights for real fight fans on the first Saturday of every month is our trademark,” said Hershman, senior vice president and general manager, Showtime Sports & Event Programming. “We are excited to be working with Oscar and his company and we’re proud to deliver such a compelling match-up on the network.”

Mares Ready For Veteran Garcia

On Friday, September 7th, Golden Boy Promotions in conjunction with Desert Diamond Casino is giving Southern Arizona boxing fans another taste of elite boxing. The scheduled six bout fight card includes the NABO Bantamweight Championship bout where former Olympian Abner Mares takes on fellow Mexican, Isidro Garcia. As an added bonus, former world champion Roberto Duran will be on hand as a special guest.

The NABO Bantamweight Title fight main event pits Abner Mares (13-0 8 KOs) against Isidro “El Chino” Garcia (24-3-2 8 KOs). Mares, a 2004 Olympian for Team Mexico was quickly signed by Golden Boy Promotions following his international spotlight. With no title bouts to his name, this will be the highly-touted Mares first attempt to rise into the elite class of the bantamweight division.  He has chosen a stiff test as he takes on the more experienced Garcia, who to date has already competed in ten title fights, including the infamous 1999 last minute battle against Jose Lopez for the WBO Flyweight belt.

Headlining the co-main event is Mexico’s Antonio Escalante (15-2 9 KOs). Escalante will go ten rounds in the featherweight division against Colombia’s Feider Viloria (20-1-1 14 KOs). As WBO Latino’s number two rank in the jr. lightweight class, Viloria is making his first showing inside the U.S.

The undercard features Nestor Rocha (17-0 5 KOs) out of California in an 6-round jr. featherweight bout against Puerto Rico’s Jonas Hernandez (6-1 2 KOs). De La Hoya, Leonard Make Friendly Bet

LOS ANGELES - Famed pugilists Oscar De La Hoya and Sugar Ray Leonard have made a “friendly” bet on two bouts between fighters from their respective camps, making the September 15 “Fireworks” boxing event, featuring Juan Manuel Marquez against Rocky Juarez in the main event at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and live on pay-per-view, that much more explosive.

In the first bout, and opening the pay-per-view telecast that evening, Francisco “Panchito” Bojado will represent De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions.  His opponent Steve Forbes, will represent the Leonard-hosted ‘The Contender’ Series, as runner-up from Contender Season Two.  In the other bout, Golden Boy pugilist and former junior middleweight champion Kassim “The Dream” Ouma will battle Contender first season winner Sergio “The Latin Snake” Mora.  The winners of the bouts will decide the winner of the bet between De La Hoya and Leonard with both decorated fighters agreeing that the loser will provide ring card girl duties between the first and second round of the main event.  If it’s a draw with one bout a piece for each side, De La Hoya and Leonard will share ring card duties.
