Vazquez TKOs Marquez in Sixth

Photo: Tom Casino/Showtime

NEW YORK – La Venganza! It was vengeance, vindication and redemption for a jubilant Israel Vazquez Saturday night on Showtime. Vazquez stopped Rafael Marquez in a rematch to regain the World Boxing Council (WBC) Super Bantamweight world title that he lost to Marquez earlier this year at 1:16 of the sixth round in an old-school, classic and bloody slugfest.

The main event of the Showtime Championship Boxing telecast from the Dodge Arena in Hidalgo, Texas had everything: tremendous offensive technique; non-stop, two-way action; a touch of controversy; and the contemplation of a third fight.

In Saturday’s co-feature, a World Boxing Association (WBA) Super Bantamweight world championship, Celestino Caballero retained his belt by unanimous decision over Jorge Lacierva in another action-packed battle (116-110, 116-111 and 115-112).

Israel Vazquez Eager to Regain Title

LOS ANGELES – A few teenagers, out of school on summer vacation, stand near the weight room of the South El Monte Boxing Club watching Israel Vazquez (41-4, 30 KOs) pace around the ring as he gets loose for what will turn out to be an exhilarating sparring session.

The teens, old enough to drive but not grow facial hair, have their mouths open, surprised and stunned to see first hand Vazquez’s unrelenting barrage of punches.

“He’s like a machine,” says Javier Garcia, a young super featherweight boxer and sparring partner to Vazquez, who overhears the kids’ commentary.  “He doesn’t stop throwing punches and he never gets tired.”

Rafael Marquez and Israel Vazquez Quotes

The slugfest that was Israel Vazquez vs. Rafael Marquez will continue on Saturday, Aug. 4, live on Showtime when World Boxing Council (WBC) super bantamweight champion Marquez makes his first 122-pound title defense against the belt’s previous owner, Vazquez, in “La VENGANZA!” at the Dodge Arena in Hidalgo, Texas.

This is a highly anticipated rematch of an exhilarating, toe-to-toe, give-and-take battle that ended prematurely with Marquez (37-3, 33 KOs) forcing Vazquez (41-4, 31 KOs) to retire on his stool with a broken nose after the seventh round.

Also on the card presented by Gary Shaw Productions and Sycuan Ringside Promotions in association with Romanza Productions and Golden Boy Promotions is World Boxing Association (WBA) super bantamweight champion Celestino Caballero (26-2, 18 KOs) defending against Jorge Lacierva (32-6-6, 22 KOs).

The world championship doubleheader will be televised on Showtime Championship Boxing at 9 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).

The 39-year-old Carbajal was booked into jail on suspicion of threatening and intimidating a police officer and a liquor violation, police said. He was later released on bond.

Sgt. Joel Tranter, a Phoenix police spokesman, said Carbajal was “agitated, argumentative and belligerent” with officers who found him walking in a vacant lot with an open bottle of rum early Thursday.

Some fight results and a fight announcement headline today’s Early Eight Count…

News, Notes, and Rumors:

- EBU Cruiserweight Champion David Haye was victorious in his heavyweight debut last night with a TKO win over Tomasz Bonin in the first round. Haye improved to 19-1 while Bonin fell to 37-2. Marquez Stops Vazquez to Capture WBC Title

IBF/IBO bantamweight champion Rafael Marquez captured the WBC super bantamweight title with an exciting seventh-round TKO over defending champion Israel Vazquez. Photo: Tom Casino/Showtime

CARSON, Calif. – After breaking his opponent’s nose in the first round of an electrifying bout, IBF Bantamweight Champion Rafael Marquez captured the World Boxing Council (WBC) super bantamweight title by stopping defending champion Israel Vazquez at the end of the seventh round Saturday on Showtime Championship Boxing.

Vazquez asked his trainer, Freddie Roach, to stop the contest because he was having trouble breathing.

“I was able to breathe through my mouth, but I couldn’t get any air through my nose,” Vazquez said. “I couldn’t breathe. I was taking a lot of shots because of that.”

After rallying from a third-round knockdown, Marquez went toe-to-toe with Vazquez for the remainder of the non-stop action bout that lived up to its billing. At the time of the stoppage, Marquez led the battle of Mexico City, Mexico, natives 67-65 twice and 66 apiece on the scorecards. Discussions for a sequel to the “Fight of the Year” candidate already are underway.
