Weekend Results - September 17, 2006
Joan Guzman outclassed Jorge Barrios and pulled out a split decision Saturday in a fight that many thought he dominated. Guzman also won the vacant WBO Super Featherweight title - the belt was stripped from Barrios one day earlier after he did not make the required weight limit set for the bout.
Former heavyweight title contender Joe Mesi continued his comeback on Friday night, winning a four-round decision over Jason Weiss. Mesi has won four fights since his medical suspension was lifted by the Nevada State Athletic Commission after Mesi had recovered from two subdural hematomas in his brain.
Junior Witter won the WBC Light-Welterweight title with a unanimous decision victory over DeMarcus Corley.
“I was up against a hell of a fighter, with a great chin,” Witter said. “But it was just a case of making sure I won, and I never felt in any trouble whatsoever.
“Now I am world champion, and I am on top of the world. A lot of people did not have faith in me, from before I turned pro - but I have proved them all wrong.”
Israel Vazquez retained his WBC Junior Featherweight belt with a 10th round TKO over Jhonny Gonzalez. There were a total of five knockdowns in the fight: Vazquez was knocked twice in the first six rounds but managed to regain his composure and give Gonzalez a taste of his own medicine.
