Clottey Scores Two Late Knockdowns in Decision Over Corrales

Lethal with both hands throughout, Joshua Clottey lands a solid right en route to winning an impressive 10-round decision over Diego Corrales. Photo: Tom Casino/Showtime
SPRINGFIELD, MISSOURI – It was too much, too soon for Diego “Chico” Corrales Saturday on Showtime.
Attempting to move up two weight classes against a dangerous, world-ranked, full-fledged welterweight, the three-time world champion was battered and beaten up by Joshua Clottey, who scored two knockdowns en route to registering a clear-cut, dominant 10-round unanimous decision.
Gary Shaw Productions and Tony Holden Promotions co-promoted the hard-fought match before a near-capacity crowd of 2,300 at The Shrine Mosque. The crowd-pleasing bout aired on Showtime Championship Boxing at 9 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the west coast).
It was an exciting, albeit one-sided slugfest from the outset. As expected, there was little dancing or posing and the boxers performed with as much determination and courageousness as any one could expect. Both stood their ground on the inside and connected with their best shots.
But the naturally bigger Clottey (31-2, 1 NC, 20 KOs), of Bronx, N.Y., by way of Accra, Ghana, was always a tad faster, quicker—and especially—stronger than Corrales (40-5, 33 KOs), of Las Vegas, Nev., by way of Sacramento, Calif., who suffered his third consecutive defeat.

Corrales Ready For War With Clottey
NEW YORK - As three-time world champion Diego Corrales prepares for the fight of his life, how does he remain calm? How does one of the most recognizable figures in boxing today cope with the lofty expectations that come with being such a talented boxer?
Determined to go down as one of the best prizefighters in history, how does Corrales relieve the tension?
“I try to keep busy with a lot of activity, and just do things constantly,” he said. “I love outdoor stuff.’’
The aggressive, crowd-pleasing, offensive-minded Corrales has never been known to get on his bicycle (take a backward-step) in the ring. Ironically, one of Corrales’ most pleasurable pastimes is riding a bike.
“It is a great way for me to escape everything that is going on,” Corrales said. “One thing about being on my bike is that I am there by myself, where I don’t have anything to worry about. It is my solace. It is quiet. The only thing I hear, I hear in my helmet.
“I can sit back and think. No matter how long I ride, if I don’t want to answer my phone, or I don’t want to be connected to anything else, I don’t have to be.’’

Cotto Moves Up in Weight; Will Take on Quintana for Vacant WBA Welterweight Strap
WBO Junior Welterweight Champion Miguel Cotto will be moving up to 147 lbs and will be taking on Carlos Quintana for the vacant WBA Welterweight title on December 2nd in Atlantic City, NJ.
What makes it even better is the fact that Antonion Margarito will be in action that same night, defending his WBO Welterweight belt against Joshua Clottey.
Paulie Malignaggi has already said that Cotto is one of the hardest punchers in boxing today. What does Quintana think about that?
“First of all, I’m not Paulie Malignaggi,” Quintana said. “I’m stronger. I’m a better puncher, I’m a left-hander and superior in terms of boxing skills. I hope to do that to Miguel, instead of him doing that to me.
The difference between Malignaggi and myself is I have fought against stronger boxers,” Quintana said. “So I can deal with that.”
It’s going to be fun to watch Cotto have the chance to display his power on such a big stage…
