Norwood-Reyes Set for September 16

Promoter Art Pelullo/Banner Promotions will present a sensational fight card on Sunday, September 16, 2007, in the Pend O’reille Pavillion at Northern Quest Casino, located at North 100 Hayford Road in Airway Heights, Washington.

In the 10-round jr. lightweight main event, former two-time WBA featherweight world champion Fred “Lil’ Hagler” Norwood, 41-1-1 with 22 knockouts, of St. Louis, Missouri, will fight Shamir Reyes, 18-5-2 with 7 knockouts, of Brooklyn, New York.

Norwood, now 37 years old, returned to the ring in June, 2006, after almost six years off and has won four straight fights since then. Nicknamed “Lil’ Hagler” for his lefthanded “seek and destroy” style reminiscent of former middleweight world champion Marvelous Marvin Hagler, Fred is looking to regain the form that he had when he fought the best in the division in his world championship days. From May, 1999, to September, 2000, he fought five current, former, or future world champions in a row, all in featherweight world title defenses, going 4-1 in those fights – Antonio Cermeno (W12), Juan Manuel Marquez (W12), Takashi Koshimoto (KO9), Julio Pablo Chacon (W12), and Derrick Gainer (TKOby11).

26 year-old Reyes is a nine-year professional veteran and tough lefthander, as well, and is ready for the biggest challenge of his pro career.

Floyd Mayweather Sr. Sees Unlimited Potential In Joan Guzman

Sunlight slices its way into Barry’s Gym through two massive doors that are thrown open to bring in the warm and refreshing Las Vegas breeze.  Joan Guzman stands in the center of the ring with a slight daydream look as he stares toward the incoming sunlight.  The balmy, sunny day grabs Guzman’s attention for only a moment, then suddenly he yells, “Todavia no,” which is Spanish for “Not yet.”  It’s a signal to new trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. that Guzman is not finished with his workout.

Guzman, one of boxing’s most feared pound-for-pound fighters and keeper of the World Boxing Organization’s junior lightweight championship, is feverishly preparing for his May 26 showdown with unbeaten Australian Michael Katsidis.

The 12-round fight is for Katsidis’ WBO lightweight interim title which will be broadcast on HBO’s “Boxing After Dark” beginning at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT from The Arena at the Anaheim (Calif.) Convention Center.

Guzman-Katsidis Not Official According to Sycuan Ringside

Sycuan Ringside Promotions officials expressed surprise Saturday that a proposed bout between undefeated World Boxing Organization junior lightweight champion Joan Guzman of the Dominican Republic and Michael Katsidis for the Australian’s WBO lightweight interim title is “official.”

“We’re more than a little surprised to read that Guzman’s manager, Jose Nunez, has gone on record saying Guzman’s fight against Katsidis is ‘official,’ a done deal,” said Glenn Quiroga, president of Sycuan Ringside Promotions.

“Nothing could be further from the truth,” said Quiroga.  “However, that being said, Sycuan Ringside Promotions really likes the match-up and hopes it can happen.”

Said Scott Woodworth, vice president of Sycuan Ringside Promotions, “I and others at Sycuan Ringside Promotions have had extensive talks with Mr. Nunez regarding this potential Guzman-Katsidis bout, and we told him we would do everything possible to make the match.

Mora to Replace Briggs and Face Ibragimov

Heavyweight contender Sultan Ibragimov’s bout against WBO Heavyweight Champion Shannon Briggs will have to wait a little longer, as a case of pneumonia has forced Briggs to withdraw from his March 10th title defense.  But Ibragimov’s opportunity to fight in front of his legion of New York City fans remains on schedule, as rugged prospect Javier Mora has been tabbed to face the unbeaten Russian at The Theater of Madison Square Garden.

“I’m very disappointed I’m not fighting Briggs, but these things happen,” said the unbeaten Ibragimov.  “I am happy that Mora has the courage to step up and face me on March 10th, and I assure my fans that I will be getting my championship belt very soon.”

One of the few heavyweights to carry on the storied boxing tradition of legendary Mexican warriors such as Julio Cesar Chavez, Marco Antonio Barrera, Erik Morales, Salvador Sanchez, and Ruben Olivares, La Chona born Javier Mora (21-3-1, 17 KOs) is on a quest to become his home country’s first world heavyweight champion.  He’s got a good start so far, as the 24-year old pressure fighter is adding to his resume every day with quality wins and experience-building bouts against the elite of the division.  In his last bout, on January 6th, Mora scored a unanimous decision win over Earl Ladson.
