“There have been numerous false reports circulating on the internet that claim Guzman’s contract with Sycuan and Golden Boy has concluded,” said Scott Woodworth, executive vice president of Sycuan Ringside Promotions. The contract between Sycuan, Golden Boy and Joan Guzman might not necessarily end on March 1, 2008, due to injuries and other specific circumstances.”

Floyd Mayweather Sr. Sees Unlimited Potential In Joan Guzman
Sunlight slices its way into Barry’s Gym through two massive doors that are thrown open to bring in the warm and refreshing Las Vegas breeze. Joan Guzman stands in the center of the ring with a slight daydream look as he stares toward the incoming sunlight. The balmy, sunny day grabs Guzman’s attention for only a moment, then suddenly he yells, “Todavia no,” which is Spanish for “Not yet.” It’s a signal to new trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. that Guzman is not finished with his workout.
Guzman, one of boxing’s most feared pound-for-pound fighters and keeper of the World Boxing Organization’s junior lightweight championship, is feverishly preparing for his May 26 showdown with unbeaten Australian Michael Katsidis.
The 12-round fight is for Katsidis’ WBO lightweight interim title which will be broadcast on HBO’s “Boxing After Dark” beginning at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT from The Arena at the Anaheim (Calif.) Convention Center.

News, Notes, and Rumors:
- According to a recent interview with BBC Sport, Jermain Taylor has turned down promoter Frank Warren’s latest offer of $4 million in order to fight Joe Calzaghe in London later this summer.
Warren has apparently been trying extremely hard to land Taylor as Calzaghe’s 21st title defense in July. However Taylor is now saying that he wants more than double the amount in order to lace up the gloves with Calzaghe.
“If Joe and Frank want me that much, make me an offer for $10 million and I will show up and bring him a gift to his front door,” Taylor told BBC Sport.
Taylor will take on Cory Spinks first on May 19th. He also says that he has no problem at all traveling overseas to Calzaghe’s home turf to fight him…
“No atmosphere is intimidating because, once you start fighting, your focus is on the man in front of you,” Taylor added.
If Taylor and Warren are unable to come to terms on a deal than Calzaghe may have to settle for a mandatory title defense against Dennis Irkin.
- Joan Guzman has fired Don House as his head trainer and replaced him with Floyd Mayweather Sr…
- Lovemore Ndou is certain that he can “whip Ricky Hatton’s ass”...
“Why do you think he chose to hand over the title rather than let me fight him for it? He knows he would get his ass whipped, simple as that. Instead he chose to fight Castillo who, just like him, is on the slide, Ndou said. “Fatton’s people know that I’m capable of doing more damage to that beer-belly than Castillo would at this time of his career. And truth is, if the Castillo that fought Corrales shows up that night, he is capable of punching Fatton through the ropes.”

Guzman-Katsidis Not Official According to Sycuan Ringside
Sycuan Ringside Promotions officials expressed surprise Saturday that a proposed bout between undefeated World Boxing Organization junior lightweight champion Joan Guzman of the Dominican Republic and Michael Katsidis for the Australian’s WBO lightweight interim title is “official.”
“We’re more than a little surprised to read that Guzman’s manager, Jose Nunez, has gone on record saying Guzman’s fight against Katsidis is ‘official,’ a done deal,” said Glenn Quiroga, president of Sycuan Ringside Promotions.
“Nothing could be further from the truth,” said Quiroga. “However, that being said, Sycuan Ringside Promotions really likes the match-up and hopes it can happen.”
Said Scott Woodworth, vice president of Sycuan Ringside Promotions, “I and others at Sycuan Ringside Promotions have had extensive talks with Mr. Nunez regarding this potential Guzman-Katsidis bout, and we told him we would do everything possible to make the match.

Barrios Stripped of Title After Failing to Make Weight
Jorge Barrios was stripped of his WBO Super Featherweight Title today after failing to make weight for his fight against Joan Guzman on Saturday night.
The fight, one of the featured bouts on the Marco Antonio Barrera-Rocky Juarez II undercard (HBO PPV, 9 ET), will still go on. However, the title is vacant. Guzman (25-0, 17 KOs) can win it with a victory.
The former junior featherweight titlist had no problem making weight. He weighed 129 pounds.
Barrios (46-2-1, 33 KOs), who was 132 pounds on his first attempt, had two hours to try to lose the weight. He returned after about an hour and had only dropped a half pound. He said he couldn’t lose more weight, and the title was declared vacant by the WBO.
In the event of a Barrios victory or a draw, the title will remain vacant.
Nevada Athletic Commission executive director Keith Kizer fined Barrios $10,000 of his $150,000 purse for missing weight. Half of the fine money goes to Guzman and half goes to Nevada’s general fund.
Also, Barrios agreed to pay Guzman an additional $10,000 to go through with the fight. Guzman will see his purse increase from $150,000 to $165,000 while Barrios will earn $130,000.
While the fight will still go on, this bout seems to lost some of it’s flare. Even with this happening, it still should be an extremely entertaining night of boxing with three solid fights all on one card.

Training Camp Notes: Joan Guzman
LAS VEGAS, Nev. - As Joan Guzman plows through another grueling sparring session, his body is soaked with sweat each time the bell sounds ending a round. But rather than use a towel to dry the undefeated former world champion, Guzman’s trainer uses an American Express card as a make-shift squeegee—and a motivational tool.
“We tried other credit cards, but American Express works the best,” said Guzman (25-0, 17 KOs), from the Dominican Republic, who challenges current World Boxing Organization junior lightweight champion Jorge Barrios Sept. 16 at the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. “We use a Gold Card now; after I beat Barrios, we can change it to Platinum.”
