Corrales Doesn’t Make Weight; Will Still Fight Casamayor
Diego Corrales, who will face Joel Casamayor for the third time, lost his WBC Lightweight World title on the scales on Friday as he weighed-in at 139 pounds, four pounds over the lightweight limit.
Oh the irony…
Remember back in June when Diego Corrales was supposed to take on Jose Luis Castillo? Castillo didn’t make weight, Corrales backed out and eventually filed a lawsuit. He also vowed that he would never disgrace the sport by not being able to make the weight.
Well what do you know…
Corrales weighed in five pounds over the 135 lb weight limit for tonight’s fight against Joel Casamayor. Unlike Corrales previous attempt to fight, this one will actually happen as Casamayor has accepted some of Corrales purse and agreed to continue on with the fight.
Corrales was stripped of his title and fined $240,000 by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
So what’s up with the title then? Let me break it down for you…
Corrales is the champ no more. Casamayor can win the title by beating Corrales tonight. Corrales does not win the title back if he defeats Casamayor. David Diaz is currently the interim champion at the moment now that Corrales was stripped. If Casamayor is to lose, he will fight Diaz for the vacant title at some point next year.
In case anyone was wondering, Casamayor weighed in at 135…
Joel Casamayor weighed-in at the lightweight limit of 135 pounds at the official weigh-in on Friday.
These fighters aren’t out of the blue just yet. They must weigh in again Saturday at noon, at which point neither fighter can weigh more than 147 pounds. If they do, it will cost them an insane $25,000 per pound.
Corrales was pretty apologetic after the whole incident:
“I grabbed Casamayor’s hand after the weigh-in and apologized. It’s not something I tried to do,” Corrales said. “I’ve been trying so hard to drop the weight, I was almost at the point of passing out this morning. Honestly, I’m responsible for my actions. I believe if you make a mistake, you should be punished. I made a mistake and should be punished.”
