Diaz Passes on Golden Boy; Signs with Don King
I thought Juan Diaz signed with Golden Boy? They thought so too…
It’s been a week since Diaz’s manager Willie Savannah announced that he had signed with Oscar De La Hoya and Golden Boy Promotions. Golden Boy even had a press release up on their website. Well apparently he backed out and is now among the boxers who have crossed over to the dark side and signed with Don King.
“This was strictly about the financial reward,” Savannah said. “My first choice for Juan was to go to Golden Boy, but boxing is a short-lived thing. You get in that ring and you don’t know what will happen. I wanted to get as much money up front for Juan as I possibly could.”
So what did Oscar have to say about this? Well nothing yet but Richard Schaefer has shed some light on the situation…
“In boxing you can’t trust anyone,” Schaefer said. “I haven’t really heard anything from Willie. I did leave a message for Willie and he has not called me back. I hope he will call me back and give me at least that courtesy. I just spoke to Oscar and I told him what was going on, and his reaction was, ‘I feel really bad for Juan Diaz.’”
Oscar’s right - Too many boxers have been victims of King’s bad management and promises. I wouldn’t be surprised if we don’t hear about Shannon Briggs having problems similar to the ones Chris Byrd had with King a few years ago.
Diaz is said to be fighting on the Briggs-Sergei Liakhovich undercard on November 4th.
