Miranda-Pavlik, Spinks-Taylor Live Blog

I’ll be live blogging the two fights tonight on HBO: Kelly Pavlik vs Edison Miranda and Cory Spinks vs Jermain Taylor.

Kelly Pavlik vs Edison Miranda

Round 1

Miranda came out expecting Pavlik to back off, but Pavlik was the aggressor for a large portion of the round.  Pavlik landed the best shots until the last 10 seconds, when Miranda turned it on.  Round: Pavlik.

Round 2

Miranda came out strong.  Pavlik then took control briefly and moved Miranda into the corner.  After Pavlik landed a couple of shots, Miranda countered well and took the fight into the middle of the ring.  Miranda landed the better shots through the round.  Both are thinking KO.  Round: Miranda/even.

Round 3

Slower round.  Mostly Pavlik pushing forward and Miranda moving back and countering.  Miranda was warned for a low blow, possibly his second of the fight, neither appeared to be too damaging, not that I’d want to know. Round: Pavlik.

Round 4

Slow in comparison to the first round, but still full of action.  Similar to the third, Pavlik was backing Miranda up for much of the round.  Miranda’s countering seemed weaker and he appears more tired than Pavlik.  Round: Pavlik.

Round 5

A lot of the same, including another low blow warning for Miranda.  With about 20-25 seconds left Miranda start tossing some big rights, and landing them, not sure how hard.  Round: Pavlik/even.

Round 6

Two big knockdowns by Pavlik.  The way Miranda’s head snapped made you wonder how he got up at all.  After the first knockown Miranda’s mouthpiece had to be put back in by his corner.  He lost a point for that, not that it matters. Round: 10-7 Pavlik.

Round 7

Not sure why they’re letting Miranda go back out there.  Miranda’s backed into a corner, not throwing much.  Eventually Pavlik starts landing hard shots again, Miranda’s going down and the fight is stopped.

Winner: Kelly Pavlik Round 7 1:54 TKO

Cory Spinks vs Jermain Taylor

Round 1

Lots of dancing.  Spinks’ southpaw stance seems to be slowing down Taylor before he even gets started.  Round: Spinks/even.

Round 2

More of the same, and a little more Spinks.  This seems like it’s in slo-mo after watching Pavlik-Miranda.  Round: Spinks.

Round 3

Taylor woke up some.  After dancing around more, Taylor got some solid shots off.  Round: Taylor.

Round 4

There’s a lot of boxing going on, some of it pretty good.  I don’t think purists are upset by this, but the excitement level just isn’t the same as the previous fight.  Round: Taylor/even.

Round 5

Taylor was strong in the middle of the round and at the end as well.  Taylor needs to carry this over into round six in order to really take control.  Round: Taylor.

Round 6

The round can be summarized easily: three hard shots by Taylor.  Spinks mixed in a good amount of jabs, but those were some decent shots he took.  Round: Even.

Round 7

Taylor wobbled Spinks at one point, when Spinks got caught moving.  Taylor also changed up his punches more than he had in previous rounds.  Round: Taylor.

Round 8

Good round by Taylor capped off by a good combination at the end.  With so much time between punches, each one that lands well stands out. Round: Taylor.

Round 9

It’s more of the same: some jabs by Spinks, a few power shots by Taylor.  Those shots by Taylor look like they’re effecting more than Spinks’ jabs are getting to Taylor.  Round: Taylor.

Round 10

The fans are somewhat restless.  There’s just not enough going on.  I saw this round already.  Round: Taylor/even.

Round 11

They’re landing about the same amount, but Taylor’s continuing to be more effective with his shots.  Spinks has to do something real next round, he has to know he’s behind.  Round: Taylor/even.

Round 12

An awkward round that didn’t look different from the rest.  Spinks ran around with his arms in the air at the end as though the fight is his.  He might be in for a shock.  Round: Taylor/Even.

Decision coming…

Winner: Jermain Taylor by split decision

Jim Lampley quickly points out that the decision could be a mistake as the scoring for Spinks just can’t be possible.  This fight was a snoozer compared to the first, and all fingers seem to be pointed as Spinks as the reason.

Larry Merchant asked Taylor if he’d fight Pavlik next, which would definitely be a better fight than the one we just saw.  Taylor made sure to call Miranda overrated and gave props to Pavlik.  Can’t say I’ve heard Taylor respect someone as much as Pavlik.  Taylor said he’d fight Pavlik if he was the best fighter out there for the most money.  Hopefully it’ll happen.

Lampley cleared up the score of the one judge who seemed off.  The scoring was adjusted, but still for Spinks.  I’m not quite sure what he was watching and Lampley and Merchant agree.

  1. I was very wrong about Miranda.he looked weak tired and just plan out overworked. He might want to take more time off between fight because he looked like he should still be fighting in 6 rounders. i was very dissappointed in miranda. I have been following him for a long time and i thought he was really going to be a force to be reconned with.
Basically like i said at the top of the page, I was very wrong about Miranda.
